Richard A. Mann, MD, MS

Transplant Nephrologist

Dr. Mann has many years of experience in the care and treatment of patients with renal disorders.  His current clinical focus is in the care of transplant patients.  He has always believed that the secret to caring for patients is to care about the patients. 

Dr. Mann received the Outstanding Attending Award in the Department of Medicine six years in a row before being awarded the Academic Excellence and Outstanding Teaching Award by the graduating medical school class.

For more than 25 years, Dr. Mann has served as a scientific advisor to the Food and Drug Administration where he was actively involved in the review and approval of the majority of immunosuppressive drugs used in transplantation today. He was the director of an immunology research laboratory for 12 years, the principal investigator or co-principal investigator on over 30 grants and clinical trials, and has published extensively.

Dr. Mann has been the recipient of many awards and honors including a Young Investigator Award from the National Kidney Foundation, a FIRST Award from the NIH, the National Medical Award in Nephrology from the Kidney and Urology Foundation of America, the Award of Honor in Nephrology by the American Board of Nephrology and he was named a Distinguished Fellow of the American College of Nephrology.  His name has appeared many times on lists of “The Best Doctors in America” and “New Jersey’s Top Doctors”. 

He has mentored/trained more than 60 nephrologists, the majority of whom practice in the tristate area.  In his spare time he is an avid cyclist.

Sonalis Bunin, MD

Transplant Nephrologist

Dr. Bunin is a transplant Nephrologist.  In addition to her clinical responsibilities she is actively involved in the education of medical students, residents, and fellows. She has been repeatedly recognized for her kind and diligent care.  She has published a number of papers on various topics in transplantation.  She has been an invited Grand Rounds speaker at a number of institutions.

Steve Khalil, MD

Associate Professor

General Nephrologist

Steve Khalil is an Assistant Professor of Nephrology in the Department of Medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He serves as Medical Director of Dialysis Clinic Inc. in North Brunswick, NJ, is Chair of the New Jersey National Kidney Foundation Medical Advisory Board and is Chair of the Nutrition Committee at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.   His clinical interests include delaying progression of chronic kidney disease and hypertension, particularly in patients who are medically underserved. He also devotes time to education of medical students, residents and fellows at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and shares his expertise on the Rutgers Project ECHO series on Diabetes-Related Chronic Kidney Disease geared to educating providers in the community.  He enjoys teaching medical students and trainees and devotes time to medical education. He is actively involved in research and was the recipient of the Research Mentor of the Year Award in 2022.

He is passionate about improving outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease and about making the highest quality of renal care available to underserved populations and those who are disadvantaged. He values long-term partnerships with patients and working together to meet each patient’s unique needs.

Zahidul Mondal, M.D.

Dr. Mondal is a transplant Nephrologist.  He is the Medical Director of the Living Donor Kidney Transplant Program. In addition to his clinical responsibilities he is actively involved in the education of medical students, residents, and fellows.   He has published a number of papers on various topics in transplantation.  He has had a number of presentations at National Scientific Meetings of the American Society of Nephrology and The American Transplant Congress.  He has been an invited Grand Rounds speaker at a number of institutions.

Lusine Nahapetyan, MD, PhD

Dr. Nahapetyan is a general nephrologist.  She received excellent training in all aspects of nephrology at Columbia University allowing her to care for all disorders in nephrology.   She has a particular interest in nephrology issues in cancer patients.  She is well published and has presented over twenty times at National Scientific Meetings.

Alex Plamm, DO

Assistant Professor of Medicine

Alex Plamm is an Assistant Professor of Nephrology in the Department of Medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.  His clinical interests include delaying progression of chronic kidney disease and hypertension.  He has specialized training in diagnosing and treating glomerular disorders. He is actively involved in the education of medical students, residents and fellows at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and has repeatedly been recognized as an outstanding educator.

Sonika Puri, MD

Associate Professor

Transplant Nephrologist

Dr. Puri is a transplant nephrologist.  In additional to her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Puri is actively involved in the education of medical students, residents and fellows.  She is involved in several research projects and is the site Principal Investigator on a Multi-Center NIH study designed to determine the role of the APOL1 gene in transplantation of African Americans.  She is involved in international studies on lipid metabolism and in interventional nephrology.  She has published extensively and has presented her research numerous times at national and international scientific meetings.

Lilian Saro-Nunez, MD

Associate Professor

General Nephrologist

In addition to her inpatient, dialysis and office practice responsibilities, Dr. Saro-Nunez is heavily involved in the education of medical students, residents and fellows.  She has served as the Director of Inpatient Dialysis for Robert Wood Johnson Hospital and currently serves as the Clinic liaison for the Division of Nephrology.  She is a member of the Department of Medicine URIM (under represented in medicine) Retention and Recruitment Task Force.  She serves as a faculty mentor in the HEAL (Hypertension Education and Lifestyle Modifications) program and is involved in community outreach for blood pressure screening. Her research has been presented many times at national scientific meetings. Dr. Saro-Nunez greatly enjoys teaching.

Mital S. Shah, MD

Dr. Mital Shah currently splits his time between caring for general nephrology patients and transplant recipients.  As a resident he received the Professionalism Award and as a Nephrology Fellow he was selected to be the Chief Nephrology Fellow.  Having completed fellowships in both hepatology and nephrology, he has extensive knowledge of both liver and kidney disorders.  In addition to his clinical responsibilities in nephrology and transplantation, Dr. Shah plays an active role in the education of medical students, residents and fellows.  His research has been presented a number of times at national scientific meetings.

Richard Sherman, MD

Professor Emeritus

General Nephrologist

Dr. Sherman is Professor Emeritus. He continues to teach the residents and fellows, rounds in the hospital, and supervises fellows in the office practice.  He has a wealth of knowledge and experience in caring for patients with kidney problems. His career focus has been on dialysis.  He is recognized as one of the nation’s leading experts in the field.  He created, and was the Editor-in-Chief, of a premier journal on dialysis entitled Seminars in Dialysis.  He has authored about 100 articles on the subject and has written 19 book chapters.   He is a widely sought after speaker.
