Conferences

Educational conferences are held on a regular basis and all fellows participate actively in the planning and participation of these conferences. Clinical conferences include GI tumor board, liver tumor board, mortality and morbidity conference, board review and GI pathology conference. Additionally these are also multidisciplinary and attended by gastroenterologists, surgeons, oncologists, radiologists and pathologists. Journal club is used as a forum to teach critical review of the literature, application of statistics, related attributes of scientific studies, biostatistics and clinical epidemiology. The Summer Lecture Series covers emergencies in GI and commonly encountered gastrointestinal disorders. Visiting Scholars/Professors/ Investigators speak at the Medicine Grand Rounds and Annual Symposium to stimulate new thoughts and ideas amongst the fellows and faculty. Ethics, end of life care, evidence based medicine, cost effective care, professionalism and the business of medicine are some of the issues addressed during teaching rounds and at conferences.

Descriptions of the conferences are listed below.

GI Grand Rounds – invited faculty from within and outside the institution with extensive expertise will provide up to date talks on a variety of issues within the GI field.

Clinical Case Conference – interesting case presentations with discussion from faculty and specialties.

Journal Club – presentation and discussion of current interesting and/or controversial articles in gastroenterology and hepatology

Pathology – monthly conference with a Pathologist to enhance basics of GI histopathology and improve clinical decision making based on review of pathology specimens.

Research Conference – monthly conference serves as a platform to present departmental research ideas and ongoing studies/projects.

Board Review – conference based on DDSEP topics to enhance knowledge base and prepare for the GI board examination.

Guidelines Review – conference with presentation and discussion on evidence-based guidelines by GI societies.

Morbidity & Mortality Conference – critical assessment and discussion on all complications occurring during the care of patients by our service.
