PPE: What, When, & How to Wear It

N95 mask access:

All faculty, fellows, and residents will be able to obtain N95 from the designated COVID floors (presently SBMU, RCU, 4W, 4E).

  • You can go to the nursing station and ask for a mask if you need one
  • If they don’t have your specific mask type or size then they will work to obtain one from the central processing
  • In an effort to conserve the supply, the N95 access will be monitored, and one will not be given a new mask daily.  Please pay attention to the conservation points below:

N95 Mask Conservation:

While we now have direct access to N95 masks, it is very important to conserve the PPE we have because I suspect it will be a long winter!

  • Please re-use your mask – only up to 5 don on-off (per hospital policy)
  • Please review the decontamination process below and reprocess your masks to help conserve – this can be done up to twice before it becomes unusable.

Appropriate PPE Overview

  • Mask use:
    • Surgical or Loop masks must be worn while in the hospital at all times (not just when around patients)
    • N95 masks must be used when on COVID units, in the Emergency Department, during codes, and anytime involved direct patient care interactions with a suspected or positive patient
    • A face shield must always be worn over the N95 to protect it. If face shield not available, you can use a second mask plus goggles
    • If the mask becomes wet or soiled, please discard and request a new mask by contacting Chief residents, Payal Parikh, and/or David Cohen.
  • Please Remember:
    • Wash your hands prior to touching the mask to put it on; do not touch the mask while you’re wearing it; wash your hands prior to touching the mask to take it off.
    • Keep your masks — we will replace them weekly.
    • Keep face shield — this will not be replaced.
